Kearney’s Home Baking

Our Story

Maura and Siobhan Kearney, the daughters of Michael and Daisy, completed their Leaving Certificate at Mount Trenchard Secondary School in Foynes in 1986 and 1988, respectively. They had a shared passion for home baking, and thus they pursued a comprehensive three-year Diploma in Bakery Production and Management from the Dublin Institute of Technology.

During the duration of their course, the sisters carried out comprehensive market research and test baking using their mother’s recipes. They quickly identified a significant local demand for tasty, traditional products like soda bread, scones and apple tarts.

Our Journey

Equipped with family expertise, determination and a love for good food, Maura and Siobhan set up their own business at the tender ages of 20 and 22. Their bakehouse was built on a Greenfield site in Ballyhahill, County Limerick surrounded by scenic countryside and an abundance of fresh air. The sisters bravely opened the bakehouse doors for business in June 1992.

Thirty years on, Maura and Siobhan employ twenty-five staff and their business continues to go from strength to strength. Their six delivery vans service shops and supermarkets from Limerick, North Kerry and North Cork on a daily basis.

I will never forget the day in 1992 when I rushed to answer the doorbell and standing there was our new parish priest Canon Sheehy. “Just calling around to introduce myself” said the Canon. I invited him into the sitting room. “Will you have a cup of tea, Canon?” I asked. ‘Twas before the Father Ted era so I skipped the go on, go on, go on. Anyway, he readily accepted the offer. Fortunately, I had just that morning purchased a Kearney’s home baked tart. While the tea kettle was boiling I sat down and chatted to the Canon. Noreen, my twelve-year-old daughter brought the tray from the kitchen. “Would you like a slice of my Mam’s home-made apple tart Canon?” she asked. Canon Sheehy tasted the tart and smiled “ Delicious” he said “I would put it on a par with Kearney’s!” With that we all burst out laughing. It was the beginning of a wonderful friendship. Canon Sheehy is an old man now but he still calls around for his cup of tea. Sometimes we have a scone or a pastry bun, other times a slice of cake or a slice of tart. Kearney’s is always fresh, always home baked, always has that special flavour. It is reliable and consistent. I would put it on a par with Canon Sheehy!

Many years ago Máire and Siobhán Kearney arrived at my shop to introduce their new home bakery. But the sisters received a poor reception from me. Unfortunately, I had taken on two other home bakeries in the preceding months and both had sunk without trace. I’d had my bellyful of home bakeries! I thought no more about Kearneys until about a month later when I received a phonecall from my mother-in-law, extolling the virtues of the Kearneys products and advising me to stock them immediately. With great humility I picked up the phone and spoke to Máire Kearney. Thankfully, Máire held no grudges and I began to stock her baking. Not only did the Kearneys brand sell superbly, but it also brought customers into my shop, customers who then bought lots of other shopping and became loyal supporters of Moss Harnett’s. Down the years the Kearney sisters have added new products, while still maintaining their core traditional range. I can safely say that I have never received a complaint from a customer about Kearneys, other than on the rare occasions when we run out of stock. The baking is of the highest standard and you always taste the difference in the genuine home-baked products. I would love to know the quantity of Kearney’s Home Bakery products that has left my shelves since we began. We definitely have come a long way since the day I ate the humble pie.
